How we choose

What we check before a product appears on Evra, what the Checked badge means, and what it does not.

Preview content. The brands and products on Evra at the moment are samples that show how partner listings will look. They are not real and have not been through the checks on this page.

Evra lists everyday essentials from partner brands, for the kitchen, cleaning, body care, the pantry, the home and baby. We don't make the products ourselves. Our job is to read the small print first, so every listing tells you plainly what a product is made of.

What the Checked badge means

Checked

A product with the Checked badge has been reviewed by us against the criteria on this page, and met them on the date shown on its product page.

It means we have

  • Read the full ingredient or materials list, and shown it on the product page.
  • Checked the claims on the label against evidence the brand has given us.
  • Asked for the safety and compliance documents that apply to that type of product, and seen that they are in place.
  • Checked the packaging and recycling information.

It does not mean

  • A laboratory test. We do not test products ourselves.
  • A certification. Where a product holds one, its page names it and the body that awarded it.
  • A safety guarantee, or a promise that a product will suit you. Always read the label and follow the directions and warnings.
  • Medical advice. We do not claim that any product is better for your health.

[PLACEHOLDER: confirm that brands cannot pay to be listed or to carry the Checked badge, and that commission plays no part in our checks.] Read how we make money.

What we check

We review every product in the same six areas. The detail depends on what the product is: a washing up liquid needs different paperwork from a wooden brush.

  • Ingredients and materials

We read the full ingredient list or, for kitchen and home items, the full list of materials, including parts such as lids, seals and coatings. The product page shows it in full.

  • Claims on the label

For each claim, such as "fragrance-free" or "plastic-free", we ask the brand for its evidence and check that it covers the product on sale. If a product claims a certification, we check the certificate.

  • Safety and compliance documents

We ask for the documents that apply to that type of product, and check that they are in place and match it. We do not repeat the tests behind them.

  • Directions and warnings

We check that the directions, warnings and allergen information are complete, and show them on the product page.

  • Packaging and recycling

We check what the packaging is made of and how to recycle it, and show both on the product page.

  • The business behind it

We confirm who makes the product and which business is responsible for it in the UK.

Documents we ask for

The safety and compliance documents Evra asks for, by type of product
Type of productWhat we ask the brand for
Body care and baby toiletriesThe name of the UK Responsible Person, confirmation of the product's safety assessment, and its notification, as UK cosmetics law requires
Cleaning and laundryThe ingredient information that detergent rules require, and the safety data sheet and hazard labelling where they apply
PantryThe ingredient, allergen and labelling information that food law requires, and the business responsible for the food
Kitchen items that touch foodA declaration of compliance for food contact materials, where the law requires one
TextilesThe fibre content, as textile labelling rules require
Other baby and home items[PLACEHOLDER: the safety standards and documents Evra asks for on baby items such as feeding equipment, and on other home items]

[PLACEHOLDER: Andi to confirm this list of documents, ideally with a regulatory adviser, before launch.]

What we look for

On top of those checks, we have our own preferences about what we list. They are choices about our range, not judgements on other products: anything sold legally in the UK has to meet the rules for its type.

What we look for

  • [PLACEHOLDER: proposed: ingredient lists kept to what the product needs to do its job]
  • [PLACEHOLDER: proposed: fragrance named in full, or no added fragrance]
  • [PLACEHOLDER: proposed: stainless steel, glass, cast iron or untreated wood wherever food is hot]
  • [PLACEHOLDER: proposed: refills, or packaging that is widely recycled, where the product type allows it]

What we choose not to list

  • Body care and baby: [PLACEHOLDER: ingredients Evra chooses not to list, each with a one-line reason framed as a preference, not a hazard]
  • Cleaning and laundry: [PLACEHOLDER: ingredients Evra chooses not to list, with reasons]
  • Kitchen and home: [PLACEHOLDER: materials Evra chooses not to list, for example plastic that touches hot food]
  • Pantry: [PLACEHOLDER: ingredients or additives Evra chooses not to list, if any]

What "clean" means on Evra

You will see the word "clean" on Evra, including on our homepage. It has no legal or scientific definition, so here is exactly what we mean by it.

When we say clean, we mean

  • The full ingredient or materials list is on the product page, so you can read it before you buy.
  • The product has been through the checks on this page and carries the Checked badge.
  • It fits the preferences in What we look for.

We do not mean

  • Chemical-free. Everything is made of chemicals, water included.
  • Natural, organic or better for the environment. We only say those things when the product page names the evidence, such as a certification.
  • Better for your health. We make no health claims about any product.

How a product gets listed

  1. A brand gets in touch. Brands send us their products through our page for partner brands.
  2. We ask for the details. The full ingredient or materials list, the evidence for each claim, and the documents for that type of product.
  3. We review it. We read everything against the criteria on this page, and ask the brand when something is unclear.
  4. We list it. Once the checks are complete, the product goes live with the Checked badge and the date we checked it.

Keeping listings up to date

We check listed products again [PLACEHOLDER: how often products are re-checked, for example every 12 months]. [PLACEHOLDER: confirm that partner terms require brands to tell Evra before they change a formula, material or label, so the change can be checked before the listing is updated.]

Each product page shows the date we last checked it. If we find that a listed product no longer fits our criteria, we pause the listing while we look into it with the brand.

Report a concern

If you think something on a product page is wrong, or you have had a problem with a product, please tell us and we will look into it with the brand.

It helps to include the product name, what you noticed, and the batch number or best before date if you have it.

Report a concern

If you have had a reaction to a product, stop using it and speak to a pharmacist or your GP. You can also report an unsafe product to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer service.
